Private Wine Clubs
We now have a private tasting room in the Tunbridge Wells store where we have hosted a number of private Wine Club tastings. Basically get yourself together with a group of 10-12 friends, come and do a tasting of your choice once every few months, then head out for a bite to eat afterwards. Easy, fun, not too expensive and a top evening out. Please note, we can also hold these events in the Oxted and Wadhurst stores.

Thursday 30th May - Wadhurst - Wines of Argentina with Laurie Webster - £20 per ticket - we welcome back Laurie from specialist Argentine importer Las Bodegas to guide us through some of the wines from his excellent portfolio. From fresh and balanced Torrontes, through sublime Malbecs and top class Cabernets, our Argentine tastings are always some of the most popular we do.
Tuesday 4th June - Champagne Lallier Dinner with Marian Geoffroy - Black Pig - £60 per ticket - we welcome Export Director, Marian, of Grand Cru producer Lallier for our first ever Champagne Dinner. Showcasing the range of exquisite bubbles alongside a wonderful dinner provided by The Black Pig, join us to celebrate summer in style.
Friday 14th June - Summer Grand Tasting at the Hotel du Vin (Tunbridge Wells) - £20 per ticket - join us for our annual summer tasting at the Hotel du Vin, where we will have 100 wines at different prices and styles for you to enjoy. Always a well supported event enjoyed by enthusiasts and amateurs alike, this is an informal walk around tasting that's simply a great night out. Saturday 6th July - all stores - Vindependents' Day Tasting - FREE - join us at Tunbridge Wells, Oxted or Wadhurst to taste through a number of wines that we import directly through our Vindependents group. Vindependents are a group of like-minded, quality independent merchants scattered across the UK who import a range of wines together as well as sharing business ideas. This will be the first national Vindependents' Day and a regular annual event. Come and sample some of the stunning small production wines that we import.
Please book early for the ticketed events. Places are limited and are apportioned on a first come, first served basis and we cannot reserve places unless they are paid for. Thursday 25th April - Wines of the Mornington Peninsula with Amelia Jukes - we were very excited to welcome Amelia of specialist Antipodean importer Hallowed Ground who showed us through the wines of Australia's most exciting and talked about region, the Mornington Peninsula. An enthusiastic group (all of whom had visited the region) enjoyed some sublime wines - the Paringa Estate Pinot Noir being absolutely sensational. Thanks to Amelia and our guests for a top evening.
Tuesday 2nd April - Secret Supper Club at the Tunbridge Wells Hotel - a small turn out but a thoroughly enjoyable evening where we tasted a number of new arrivals and had a good time with our guests. A terrific little Garnacha from Borsao, a delightful Southern Rhone from Chante Cigale, deep Mallorcan wine from Macia Batle and a top Chilean Pinot Noir from Tabali were especially enjoyed.
Friday 15th March - Best 100 Australian Wines with Matthew Jukes - Hotel du Vin - as last year, a top evening where 100 guests enjoyed the finest wines that Australia can offer. 48 of the best 100 from Matthew's list were on show with some really fine offerings. Matthew worked the room wonderfully as usual and the last guests left after we did! Top wines included Skillogalee's Trevarrick Riesling and Shaw & Smith's Shiraz.
Tuesday 12th February - Greywacke Dinner with winemaker, Kevin Judd - Hotel du Vin A fabulous evening with the founding winemaker of Cloudy Bay, Kevin Judd. Having made his own wines under the Greywacke label since 2009, Kevin ran though his entire range including Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and of course Sauvignon Blanc in two forms. Kevin's dry wit was a highlight, coupled with a delicious meal form the team at the Hotel du Vin made for a superb evening.

Saturday 8th/Sunday 9th December - all stores - FREE CHRISTMAS GRAND TASTING -a top weekend's tasting where we showcased 40 odd wines. Really well supported as usual and all of you that came seemed to enjoy yourselves. Very brisk business done as well, which is always nice. Looking forward to the next one.
Wednesday 14th November - Tunbridge Wells - Isole e Olena Dinner with Paolo di Marchi - we were absolutely thrilled and honoured to have one of the world's top winemakers, Paolo di Marchi of sensational Tuscan estate Isole e Olena, join us to host a wine dinner. A fantastic public speaker, hugely passionate about wine, we tasted through all of Paolo's beautifully crafted creations, including the iconic Cepparello and his Piedmont estate Sperino. Great food as well and a superb group of customers.
Thursday 4th October - Tunbridge Wells - Jaboulet Dinner with Marie Cordonnier - yet another iconic producer joined us for a wine dinner at The Black Pig. Jaboulet's UK Commercial Director, Marie, presented a range of outstanding wines from white & red Cotes du Rhone, through a pair of Thalaberts (2009 and 1990), up to a mature vintage of one of the world's top wines, La Chapelle 1989. A stunning evening with the top wines showing their true worth.
Thursday 20th September - Tunbridge Wells - Argentine Dinner with Eduardo Pulenta of Pulenta Estates - a terrific evening where Eduardo Pulenta took us through almost their whole portfolio, accompanied by some excellent food from The Black Pig team - a good a menu as I think we've ever had. The star wine amongst a stellar cast was undoubtedly the stunning Gran Corte. Thanks to Eduardo, The Black Pig and all that took part.
Thursday 6th September - Tunbridge Wells - Discovering Beaujolais with Rob MacCulloch - a small but well informed group of us were treated to an in depth and very interesting tasting courtesy of Rob from shipper Domaine Direct. Stunning wines from tiny producers across the Cru's of Beaujolais, all hand-made from fruit of vine up to 100 years old. Star wines included a 6 year old Cote de Brouilly from Chateau Thivin and a sublime Chenas from Hubery Lapierre. Look out for these wines on the shelves very soon.
Friday 15th June - Hotel du Vin (Tunbridge Wells) - Summer Wine Festival - our annual summer festival was as exciting as usual with nearly 100 wines on show. We had the most enthusiastic and appreciative group yet enjoying the wines and asking lots of questions. Thanks to all that made the evening a huge success (customers & suppliers alike).
Thursday 17th May - Tunbridge Wells - Malt Whisky Tasting - we'd been asked many times to do a whisky tasting, and this did not disappoint. Ben Ellefsen from whisky specialists Master of Malt joined us to present a fine range of malts, book-ended by a delicious Bathtub G&T to begin with and a lovely Old Fashioned. I don't think we've ever had so many questions from a group and Ben answered everything that was thrown out there. Star of the show had to be the 1953 Glenfarclas at £6k a bottle!!
Thursday 19th April - Tunbridge Wells - The Wines of Sicily with Sergio De Luca - Massive thanks to Sergio who thoroughly entertained an enthusiastic group with not only some fantastic wines, but also with a potted history of wine in Sicily. Some real gems including the excellent Zisola Nero D'Avola and the sublime sweet marsala from Cantine Florio.
Thursday 29th March - Juliets (Tunbridge Wells) - Quinta do Crasto Wine Dinner with Manuel Lobo - A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all at our first Dinner to be held at Juliets. Manuel flew in specially to show 5 of his sensational wines alongside a delicious menu prepared by chef Simon that was finished off with a chilled 2008 Vintage Port coupled with 3 incredible British cheeses, a combination to remember. Thank you to Manuel for his knowledge and insight into Portugal's top estate.
Friday 16th March - Hotel du Vin (Tunbridge Wells) - Top Australian Wine Tasting with Matthew Jukes - Huge thanks to wine writer and presenter Matthew, who joined us to present a stunning range of top Australian wines to an enthusiastic audience. I think that people were genuinely amazed by the range and diversity that Australia now offers and the free Dartington tasting glasses went down a storm. A great night and we look forward to doing the event again with Matthew next year.
Saturday 3rd March - Tunbridge Wells - Saturday Masterclass - Up & Coming Reds - an enthusiastic group joined The Wine Teacher, David Timmons, as he presented his top picks for the reds that all the savvy people will be drinking in the near future. Some real gems amongst the line up.
Thursday 1st March - The Old Vine (Wadhurst) - Urlar Dinner with Angus Thomson - a fun evening where we were entertained by the owner of premium New Zealand winery Urlar as he presented his fine range of biodynamic wines. The team at The Old Vine prepared a wonderful meal to complement the wines and Angus was very informative, as usual. Thanks to all who attended.

Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th December - ALL STORES - Grand Christmas Tasting Weekend - FREE - thanks to all who joined us for our annual Christmas extravaganza. Always well attended and great fun, and some great takings in each store so thanks for your support.
Saturday 3rd December - Tunbridge Wells - Saturday Masterclass - Christmas Wines - our final Masterclass of the year with David Timmons, this time looked at classic Christmas wines plus some more unusual options.
Thursday 10th November - Wadhurst - Around France with Francois Lincoln - we welcomed Liberty Wine's Francois to Wadhurst to take us through a selection of top wines from across France. From crisp Loire wines, through Burgundy, Bordeaux, Alsace and the Rhone, there were also wines from lesser known appellations. Some sublime wines on show, and enjoyed by all.
Saturday 5th November - Tunbridge Wells - Saturday Masterclass - Classic Red Varieties - a keen group of tasters joined Wine Teacher, David Timmons, for the second of our Masterclasses, this time focusing on the main red varieties. Comparisons of Old World and New World versions of the same grape were discussed with plenty of tasting going on.
Thursday 3rd November - Tunbridge Wells - Wine Dinner with Felton Road - we completed our Autumn schedule of wine dinners with another iconic New World producer, Felton Road. Nicola Greening, the lady that looks after European sales and daughter of the owner Nigel, presented their sublime range of wines alongside a four course menu from The Black Pig team. As well as tasting the new releases of their Riesling, Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (including some single blocks), Nicola was kind enough to bring along some Chardonnay and Pinot from back vintages - always a real treat.
Thursday 27th October - Tunbridge Wells - New Spain - many thanks to the lovely group that came to taste an excellent line up of wines from Spain's lesser known regions. From the aromatic whites of Rias Baixas down to the warming reds from Jumilla, all the wines showed well and were much appreciated. The stars of the show were clearly the Camins del Priorat from Alvaro Palacios, and the stunning Nuestro 20 from Ribera producer Diaz Bayo (customers were also treated to a sample taste of two unreleased wines from Diaz Bayo, which were both pretty awesome).
Thursday 13th October - Oxted - The Secrets of White Burgundy with Rob MacCulloch - thanks to Burgundy expert Rob (from Domaine Direct) who entertained an enthusiastic audience through the hidden delights of Burgundy. Some truly excellent wines at very competitive prices.
Friday 7th / Saturday 8th October - All Stores - New Season Tasting - thanks to everyone that joined us to taste a number of wines that are new to the range. They all seemed to go down pretty well and, for the most part, everyone had a good time. As usual, a couple of morons that view the tasting as a free piss up. Don't bother next time guys, we can just about get by without you.
Saturday 1st October - Tunbridge Wells - Saturday Masterclass - Classic White Varieties - Wine Teacher David Timmons took the group through the basics of wine tasting and looked at the classic white grape varieties. Informal, fun and educational, with the emphasis on lots of tasting, everyone had a great afternoon.
Thursday 29th September - Tunbridge Wells - Wines of Argentina with Laurie Webster of Las Bodegas - following on from the success of last year's Argentine tasting, we welcomed back Laurie to taste through the new vintages of current favourites as well as looking at some new lines. The award winning Zohar Torrontes by Susana Balbo and the Opalo Cabernet seemed to be exceptionally well liked on the evening, as well as Susana's Late Harvest Malbec. Top stuff.
Wednesday 28th September - Tunbridge Wells - Wine Dinner with Denis Horgan, owner Leeuwin Estate. A great evening enjoyed by all, eating some great food and tasting through the entire Art Series range. Incredibly classy wines with real finesse and Denis is a really down to earth man, great company and very relaxed with customers. Thanks to everyone that came along.
Monday 5th September - Tunbridge Wells - Wine Dinner with John Duval - Many thanks to John and our customers that braved a chilly Monday evening to enjoy some great food and sublime wine from a true legend. A thoroughly enjoyable night eating and drinking with a really great winemaker and very nice, humble man.
Friday 10th June 7 to 10pm - Tunbridge Wells - The Secret Cellar Summer Wine Festival
Huge thanks to all the customers that attended this year's Summer Wine Festival at the Hotel du Vin. Whilst the room was incredibly busy at certain points in the evening, there was quite a buzz which customers and suppliers alike really enjoyed. Some fantastic wines enjoyed on the evening and a great time has by all. Sorry to those that missed out on tickets - be sure to book early next year!!
Thursday 19th May - Tunbridge Wells - Wine Tasting Dinner with Matt Gant of First Drop Wines -
An excellent dinner where Matt took us through the new vntages of his wines. Both the Arneis and Chardonnay were brilliant, and the reds are always outstanding. With a wonderful menu from The Black Pig team and a top group of customers, it really was a great evening. Thanks to all that attended.
Thursday 14th April - Wadhurst - Bordeaux 2008 with Leigh Claridge of Maison Sichel
Many thanks to Leigh (from Bordeaux negociant Sichel) who tasted through some of the 2008 clarets with us, as well as a handful of 2010 barrel samples. Clos L'Eglise the stand out on the night.
Thursday 17th March - Pinot Noir from across the World with Martin Sheen of FMV. Martin wowed us with his passion and knowledge for this most tricky of grapes showing wines from France (Alsace, Champagne, Loire & Burgundy), USA (Oregon & California), New Zealand, South Africa & Chile. Drouhin's Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot just pipped Dog Point for favourite on the night. Many thanks to all that attended our first (hopefully of many) single varietal tasting!
Thursday 24th February - Wine Dinner with Larry McKenna of Escarpment. Sincere thanks to Larry for taking an enthusiastic group through his fine range of wines as we enjoyed a superb five course meal from the team at The Black Pig. The Chardonnay and the single vineyard Te Rehua Pinot Noir were both particularly good. A private dining event of the highest order, so thank you for all those that attended.
New for 2010 - we're delighted to welcome aboard Master of Wine, Nick Adams, who will be working closely with us through this year. Nick has been an MW since 1992 and has worked with an extensive list of the world's top producers, as well as holding some prominent positions within the UK wine trade. He's one of the most down to earth Masters of Wine there is, making dealing with him not only informative but also great fun, and it's an honour to have him as part of our team.
Nick's focus will be on organising tasting events (especially dinners and corporate events), conducting wine tours for small groups, cellar plans, Master of Wine recommendations, and sourcing new gems for our list. He will be a real benefit to our business.
