12 Bottle Everyday Classics
Three whites and three reds (2 bottles of each) that we believe offer fantastic value for money as everyday drinkers. Okay, they're a little bit more money that some want to pay, but for that extra pound or two per bottle, you do get so much more.
The Cheverny from France's Loire is a perfect case in point. Located close to Sancerre, the wine is a blend of 85% sauvignon (giving all the grassy, minerally notes one expects) and 15% chardonnay (which adds weight and complexity to the palate). Fantastic value from a lesser known appellation. The MandraRossa Fiano from Sicily is another gem that stood out at a recent tasting - beautifully balanced with floral, tropical notes. The final white is the Redfin Chardonnay, made by Stephen Pannell (former winemaker of the Eileen Hardy Shiraz amongst other fine wines). This is the sort of white that put Australia on the map before they started going over the top with false oak flavours. This is back to the basics of letting the pure fruit express itself.
For the reds, Azamor from Portugal's Alentejano region is a lovely blend of Syrah, Merlot, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet. Very fresh with smooth red and black fruits. The Chilean Kintu Merlot is superb value, really balanced, ripe and velvety, as lovely on its own as with a host of dishes. And Allegrini's Valpolicella seems to get better with each vintage. One of those wines that is deliciously quaffable with red cherry, plum and subtle sweet spice.
