Situated in the foothills of Israel's Judean mountains, Clos de Gat is a
walled vineyard with a 3,000 year old wine press (gat) in the middle of
it. It's a modern winery started in 1998 and is a joint project
between winemaker Eyal Rotem and Bordeaux negociant Maison Sichel (thus
the French sounding name). The wines have come on in leaps and bounds
over the last few years and they are now of very high quality and rather
delicious.
The 2009 Har'el Syrah actually has 15% Cabernet Sauvignon blended in to give additional structure. On the nose there's lovely inviting aromas of blackberry, damson, dark cherry and blackcurrant as well as clove and white pepper hints. The palate is silky and well balanced, full of spicy dark fruit, subtle savoury and meat notes and toasty oak. The acidity is very good and the tannins are ripe and fine. A lovely finish, this is a full balanced complex wine - paired with a fillet steak, perfect.
SC Rating - OUTSTANDING (Mike)
