Les Illustres is a wonderful new addition to our list and is part of a parcel of wines we're now importing directly from Les Vignobles Foncalieu, a co-operative that we came across at the London Wine Fair earlier this year. From the Coteaux D'Enserune, a new IGP (Indication Geographique Protegee) created in 2009 in the Languedoc region of France, this is one of Foncalieu's top wines. A blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah with a bit of Marselan and Merlot added for softness, it's really quite a stunner. The nose is of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit with subtle raspberry hints and a touch of vanilla. On the palate, the ripe fruit is beautifully balanced and there's lovely freshness and elegance that sit in harmony with the forest fruits. The oak is well integrated and there's notes of chocolate, clove, spice and leather. Very complex and enjoyable with juicy acidity and ripe tannins. Excellent with a persistent finish. Superb.
