It's difficult to find decent Merlot at sub £10 but we've found a real gem here. As with all the Le Versant wines, it's a classy effort both tasting and looking good. Varietally the wine is very correct being medium bodied with ripe plum and berry fruits on both the nose and palate. However, there's a bit more to it than just that. Sniff again and you get a hint of tobacco and smoke. Sip again and you get a bit of savouriness and then hints of dark chocolate. Take another sip and there's a touch of earthiness. The tannins are soft and the acidity is good, and the taste is persistent. This delivers a lot of complexity for the price and we're delighted to add it to our list.
