A great example of what the recently created 'Indication Geographique Protegee' (IGP) limitation can create; less stringent than the traditional AOC control, meaning blending of varieties is now permitted to make quality wines that previously would have legally been forced down to the lowly 'Vin de Table' status (although you can still find some crackers even here!). Here a 60/40 split of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon is put together with the Syrah oak aged for 12 months before blending.
The nose shows the spicy, vanilla lead blackberry of the syrah with a darker backing of the cassis and plum from the cabernet, typical earthy herby aromas of the region sit in the shadows leading the way for a complex palate with a continuation of the fruits for the nose with violet and tarry licks.Good structure for a wine at this level from the oak aging. Try it with hearty stews or casseroles and it will come to life!
SC Rating - Excellent (Dan)
