Cuvée Baltazar is the showpiece of the Neffiez range of excellent Coteaux de Languedoc wines and for me, just the kind of wine I love - deeply complex and evolutionary, a wine to make you stop and think, a wine away from the norm. With a backbone of 95% dark and brooding Syrah with the addition of only 5% Granache, picked when green to maintain acidity and add a little astringency (in a good way).
The wine is almost black in colour with an intense, heady nose of currant, blackberry, tapenade and wild herbs. The palate is lush and rich with great density of flavour. Complex and finely honed with ripe dark berry fruits with a little lifted red fruit in the mix. Leather and earth, truffle, layered spice all sit within the fine grained tannins that have just the right grip. The length of flavour goes and goes with the clean acidity maintaining linearity. This wine has a good life ahead of it and can be cellared until 2015-18 quite confidently.
