Gusbourne Estate in Appledore, Kent is one of English Wines' fastest rising stars. With 22ha of vines planted in the Kentish countryside just 6 miles from the coast, enjoying the Channel's moderating influence on climate to produce fruit of exceptional quality leading to distinctive, delicious wines. Production is concentrated on Sparkling Wines, but when the weather permits, a small quantity of still wine is made.
In 2011, favorable conditions meant the ripeness of the grapes was suitable for production of still red wine. Finding good quality English Reds that have the right balance of fruit, tannin and acidity has long been a quest of ours and after tasting many, many poor examples we were thrilled with this one. The nose has loads of spicy berry fruit, leading to a fine, mid-weight palate with rich red fruit and white pepper with real intensity. Strangely enough, it is not unlike the Syrahs of the Northern Rhone, perhaps a sign of things to come!! A really impressive effort.
