Sassicaia is a masterful cuvée of the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes from the vineyards of Castiglioncello, Doccino, Quercione, San Martino, Mandrioli, Sassicaia, and Aianova, all of which are situated on hilly slopes in a subzone of Bolgheri in coastal Western Tuscany. The brainchild of the Marchesi Incisa della Rochetta, who, following his passion for Cabernet Sauvignon, decided to create a wine in comparison with his favourites from Bordeaux, using cuttings from vines at First Growth properties.
Today, Sassicaia is legendary, single-handedly responsible for launching the Super Tuscan movement and may well be the most coveted Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc blend ever produced. The regard for this wine is so high that in 1994 it was granted its own DOC status, a first for Italian wine. Silky and discreet in style, intensely flavoured, dry and long, this is a wine to be cellared for the long term, rewarding patience with an intense, complex and memorable experience.
