We've previously stocked the wines from Johner's excellent German estate, so were delighted when we came across their property in Gladstone, near Martinborough in New Zealand's North Island. Along with Central Otago, this is the region for top Pinots in New Zealand, and this is a stunning example. What I like about it so much is that is has that perfect balance between sweetness of ripe fruit and subtle savoury edges, and comes across as a blend of Old World and New. German Pinots can often be more savoury, and you have that here, but there's also a pure sweet berry fruit character running through the wine, then hints of spice and toasty notes to round it all off. The acidity is fresh and balanced and there's a little hint of grip as well, suggesting the wine will develop further in bottle. It's delicious now, harmonious, complex and long, a really stunning wine and a very welcome addition to our range.
