From a small but top quality house in the Douro. Ruby red in colour, the nose is very pronounced and shows plums, dark cherry and prunes. There's also spice - nutmeg and clove - and white pepper, licorice and toasty oak notes. Very complex and inviting. On the palate, the wine is a touch heavier than medium bodied, but lighter than expected. This vintage has developed beautifully and has lovely weight. Again, you get the dark fruits but there are some red fruit notes there to lift it all. You also get all the spice, aniseed, oak and smoke, with silky tannins and balanced acidity. It's really very good, and the length of flavour is persistent. At 13% alcohol, this is another plus in my book, so all round a bit of a treasure. Drink over the next year as this is on top form now.
SC RATING - Very Good ++ (Mike).
