This is something a touch special for £20. Ribera del Duero is fast becoming - in my mind it already is - Spain's foremost red wine region. Classic Ribera takes you to a dark place, on the whole fuller bodied, concentrated, darker and more brooding than Rioja. La Rioja Alta is known for producing some great Rioja's but in 2000 looked for a site in Ribera to produce a different style. Boy did they choose well.
Made from 100% Tinto del Pais - Tempranillo to you and me - a beautifully aromatic style, dark blackberry, strawberry, mocha, toffee, liquorice and toasted notes all come through on the palate. Tannins are full and sweet and the acidity is thrilling, it really is. For a rich, big, concentrated wine the acidity keeps it all in balance to produce a beautiful long finish to the wine.
One of my wines of the year.
