Domaine Nicolas Gaudry Pouilly-Fumé Les Champs de Cri
Domaine Nicolas Gaudry Pouilly-Fumé Les Champs de Cri

Tasting Notes
While similarly complex Sauvignon Blanc-based wines from neighbours like Dagueneau and Edmond Vatan continue to climb in price and reputation, Gaudry’s “Les Champs de Cri” remains a neglected and ridiculously underpriced gem.
The nose reveals layers you don’t expect from Sauvignon Blanc—yes, there’s citrus peel and white flowers, but also roasted almonds, wet stones, and a haunting chalky, truffly note that only comes from limestone soils.
Producer Profile
Nicolas Gaudry, a 6th generation winemaker based in Tracy-sur-Loire since 2003, took over the family estate after studying in Beaune and working in South Africa. Working an initial area of 2 hectares in 2003, Nicolas Gaudry saw the estate expand to 15 hectares following his father’s death. He now manages 30 hectares and has carried out a complete restructuring for bottled sales. Sandy Gaudry has joined full-time to manage administration, marketing and accounting.
The Estate produces five cuvées of Pouilly-Fumé and one of Pouilly-sur-Loire, favouring single-plot vintages to express the diversity of the terroirs. Sustainable cultivation is emphasized with an annual renewal of the vines. Production, 60% of which is exported, is regularly awarded and marketed in France and internationally, strengthening the reputation of the estate.
This distribution in the Pouilly vineyard offers opportunities for complex blends of all types of terroirs to create a typical Pouilly-Fumé wine. Nicolas Gaudry’s wines, Pouilly-Fumé, Sauvignon, and Pouilly-sur-Loire, Chasselas, are crafted with passion.
It is thanks to meticulous work, throughout the production cycle, from the vine to the cellar, that the Pouilly-Fumé from the wine estate of Nicolas Gaudry, winemaker in Nièvre expresses the best aromas.
Viticulture
The “Caillottes” and “Barrois” limestone-clay soils deliver a mineral signature that rivals the complexity of Grand Cru Chablis.
Nicolas Gaudry understands that great wine comes from the finest terroirs. When he acquired this coveted parcel of Les Champs de Cri from his dear friend Marc Deschamps, he inherited something special: 2.3 hectares of ancient 70-year old vines at the top of the hill, rooted deep in “Caillottes” (Oxfordian Jurassic) and “Barrois” (Portlandian) limestone—a similar geological profile to Grand Cru Chablis.
This isn’t just any vineyard in Pouilly-Fumé. It’s the vineyard that consistently produces wines of uncommon depth and longevity. In the tiny hamlet of Les Loges, known as the “village of vignerons,” this site has almost mythical status.
Meticulously hand-harvesting.
Winemaking
This vineyard often referred to as “The Bâtard-Montrachet of the Loire.” It miraculously combines the piercing minerality of top-tier Sancerre, the brooding mystery of mature Vouvray, and the depth of Grand Cru Chablis. It’s an absolute MUST for any Loire enthusiast.
Gentle winemaking preserve every nuance of this exceptional terroir. If you are passionate about French white wine, and need the very best from villages like Chassagne-Montrachet and Pessac-Léognan, this remarkable Pouilly-Fumé needs to be in your glass as soon as possible.
Out of respect for the complexity and depth of this wine, Nicolas leaves this wine in contact with the lees for several months more than his other cuvées and it is released for sale later than the other wines of the estate. It is frequently marked by notes of bitter orange, jasmine and beeswax.
Goes well with
The Nicolas Gaudry ‘Les Champs de Cri’ Pouilly-Fumé is superbly versatile with food pairings. It is particularly delightful with seafood such as oysters, scallops, or grilled fish, where its acidity and mineral complexity can truly shine. It also pairs well with goat cheese, salads dressed with vinaigrette, and light poultry dishes, making it a perfect accompaniment for a variety of dining occasions.
Cellaring
Age-worthy elegance: Les Champs de Cri develops fascinating secondary notes over 5-10 years.
