Greywacke - the new wine from Kevin Judd (Cloudy Bay's winemaker from 1986 to 2008) - has been generating tremendous excitement in the wine trade recently on account of the wine being so good and there not being much of it - a mix that will no doubt push the price of subsequent vintages higher. We've got a decent allocation, but this has sold out quickly for the past five years, so if you are a fan of top Marlborough Sauvignon, buy now.
As for the wine - it gets better each vintage. A delicious, nose of subtle tangy gooseberry fruit with passion fruit hints invites you to indulge in the wine. Beautifully balanced on the palate, it's got the perfect mix (for me) of zippy green fruit (gooseberry and lime), subtle tropical hints (passion fruit and mango) and a savoury green pepper edge. The fruit is not so overt as to make it sickly sweet, it's done very elegantly with a lovely purity to the wine and a mineral edge. The acidity is high but well balanced and the length of finish is massive. It's a tremendously impressive wine and this is now the iconic Marlborough Sauvignon.
