Urlar is a new biodynamic winery set up by a Scottish family in a new wine producing region in New Zealand's North Island. Gladstone (not far from Martinborough) was chosen because of its rugged, untouched beauty but, more importantly, it has the potential to produce world class wines there. And on a tasting of the wines at a recent dinner with Angus, the owner, they're doing a lot of things right.
The Sauvignon Blanc is undoubtedly New Zealand Sauvignon with lovely aromas and flavours of lime, ripe gooseberry and green pepper, as well as subtle peach and tropical notes. However, the wine also shows beautiful purity and balance, as well as a lovely mineral edge. It's delicious and, given that this is their first vintage, it's only going to get better. I know that Matthew Jukes has this wine down as one of his Top 100 this year, so look out for Urlar - you'll be hearing a lot more of them over the coming years.
