I recently received an invite to "The Beautiful South", so imagine my initial disappointment when there was no Paul Heaton singing 'Perfect 10' or 'A Little Time' but hundreds of wines from the Southern Hemisphere to taste!!
It took me no time to find my perfect 10, well perfect 3 actually - the wines of Newton Johnson. The cool climate area of Hemel En Aarde valley produces some truly world class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their vineyards are just a stone's throw from the Atlantic ocean and the wines are very impressive.
The 'entry level' Chardonnay is by no means a fair label for it. Aged in 9 months in Burgundian barriques you get beautiful citrus notes (lemons to tangerines), with peach, light nuttiness, minerality and subtle toastiness with a clean, elegant finish. I'll be raising a glass to Gordy Newton Johnson for a lovely little wine.
