Producer Profile
At the bottom of the Dentelles de Montmirail, in the lovely village of Gigondas, Claude Roux shares his passion of wine and terroir with his two children Isabelle and Julien.
Notre Dame des Pallières is a very old family estate whose name comes from the middle ages and more specifically from the miraculous water source located at the edge of their estate. This source had the power to protect from the terrific plague.
Past history shows that the local people built a chapel where the Virgin appeared. Today it only remains a wall as well as a wooden statue, which can now be found in the Gigondas church. Isabelle and Julien’s grandfather, Lucien Roux, officially gave it his name in 1935.
Viticulture
The wine is made from vines planted in the Ratanaud, the summit between the valleys of the Aygues and the Ouvèze. This is the exceptional terroir composed of red-brown marn (compacted sand & alluvial clay, with a high iron content) covered with river stones, the subsoil is grey clay, algees from origin.
This area is probably the only area in the South of France where we can find such soil on root level, and giving exceptional wines. Due to the altitude (+360 metres), the vines enjoy freshness during the night and many sunshine hours during the day, increasing herewith the complexity of the wine, already high because of the soil.
The gobelet pruned vines are all hand-harvested, only the best grapes are picked at perfect maturity, of course.
Winemaking
The grapes are destemmed and enjoy a long maceration of over 30 days with temperature control, pumping over and cap-punching. Most is done by gravity, the grapes, juice and wine are handled with the utmost care.
The aging takes place for the most part in concrete tank, and for all smaller part in French oak barrels. This ensures that the wine expresses the grapes as well as the exceptional terroir.
Goes well with
Red meat, game, truffles, spicy food.
Cellaring
10-15 years with careful cellaring.
