Producer Profile
At the bottom of the Dentelles de Montmirail, in the lovely village of Gigondas, Claude Roux shares his passion of wine and terroir with his two children Isabelle and Julien.
Notre Dame des Pallières is a very old family estate whose name comes from the middle ages and more specifically from the miraculous water source located at the edge of their estate. This source had the power to protect from the terrific plague.
Past history shows that the local people built a chapel where the Virgin appeared. Today it only remains a wall as well as a wooden statue, which can now be found in the Gigondas church. Isabelle and Julien’s grandfather, Lucien Roux, officially gave it his name in 1935.
Viticulture
The Notre Dame des Pallières vineyards covers thirty hectares and produce respectful famous appellations with regard to nature : Gigondas, Rasteau, Sablet, Lirac & Côtes du Rhône. The wine estate gathers typical grape varieties from the Rhône valley such as Grenache, Mourvèdre & Syrah in order to produce highly traditional vinified quality grapes.
The vines find a strong anchor in quaternary river alluvial soils under the Trignon Valley, and the perfect growing conditions due to the favourable micro climate and exceptional sunshine. Isabelle and Julien’s great grandfather, Jules Roux, planted the oldest vines the family have in Gigondas.
The Sablet vines, over 40 years old, are located on hillsides which dominate the village for Grenache (clay-limestone subsoil) and near village for Syrah (silico-limestone subsoil).
Winemaking
The selection of old vines is harvested manually and the grapes carefully sorted. All the bunches are then destemmed. The two grape varieties are vinified separately, the maceration lasts approximately 20 days with temperature control. The assembly is carried out at the end of malolactic fermentation.
